Essential Oils: How Do They Work?

If you have been reading our Field Notes or have been following us on our socials, you'd have noticed our focus on differentiating essential oils from fragrance oils, and why we exclusively use essential oils to scent our rituals.

In this article, we'll be sharing how essential oils truly work. We believe essential oils are a superior option to fragrance oils due to its aromatherapeutic benefits, which is not present with the usage of fragrance oils.

Essential oils work primarily through two mechanisms to provide us with its aromatherapeutic benefits — inhalation and absorption.

01 / Absorption

Our skin absorbs the tiny molecules from essential oils, allowing them to enter our bloodstream. This enables targeted benefits, such as soothing sore muscles or promoting skin health, when applied directly to the skin.

Methods: Topical application of Pulse Oils and Body Oils containing essential oils.

02 / Inhalation

The scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and impacts the emotional centre of our brain. This triggers hormonal responses and the release of 'feel good' chemicals almost immediately.

Methods: Diffusion of Mood Oils

Combining Absorption and Inhalation

By combining both mechanics, we can maximise the benefits of aromatherapy, experiencing both immediate mood enhancement and localised effects for a personalised and comprehensive aromatherapy experience.
